影像中的意象性
—— 万毅的《山野》
万毅
万毅这组《山野》系列的影像作品不同于我们通常看到的树木山川，而是取材于不引人注目的山岩，万毅发现它们——因为肌理、色彩、线条，构成的相互关系而呈现出冲突神秘或美或充满力量的动人之处。
它们有些恰好映照了万毅的心境，似他某些说不清道不明的梦境，带着潜意识的痕迹；有些呈现出一种孤寂矛盾、深邃虚幻的空间，暗藏着下意识的解构……总之它们的面貌发人深思和联想，充满了意象性。
这正是万毅关注和感兴趣的艺术表现方式。在这自然天成里，他还发现了它们可触摸的粗粝的质感，仿若油画的色块笔触、大漆的斑驳风蚀的效果，可那分明又具有画笔所不及的丰富和千变万化。并且有天作之合、日光月华之奇妙。天然具有更加自由、奔放、独一、不可思议的特质和力量。
那么万毅要做的就是运用他经过良好油画训练的眼光、人生的历练思考和日益精进的摄影技术，来选择、剪辑、处理这些自然的画面，使这些沉淀了时间和空间变迁的沉默山岩，赋予了观看中的思考。
其中最重要的方式是放大和光的处理，这种方式带来的效果是：其一，改变了习惯的观看方式，把某处自然的肌理放大到可视的语言，产生了新的视觉体验，于微观之间见宏观。其二，通过特写以达到强烈的视觉冲击力——原来在一处静止的经常被忽略的岩石里储存着川流不息的色彩与线条的运动，储存着自然生生不息的轮回转换和难以复制的造物之美。其三，是在对自然致敬！他的作品主要是通过剪辑和色彩上的调整，使之更具意味和表现力。
这批带有强烈的主观意识和艺术取向的作品，是心灵与自然的交融沟通，一方面是心里的感受和意识在自然中得以“似曾相识”和“把酒言欢”；另一方面借自然之力之言语启发新的思维，突破样式，传达内在视觉中的精神力量。在这里，摄影仅是媒介，面对作品有人在其中看到自身的欢喜，他的惆怅和激情，或者抵达了他的梦境，又或者隐约可见表现主义情感的宣泄或是武林秘图所绘中国式的气韵生动和退让，让眼和心灵在其中都有所品味和触动。
万毅走在绘画与摄影的边界，远离经验，选择了片段的肌理、物质内在的结构，消解确切地点的参照，回归自然能量的原始形象，并以此表达对自然对人生的关照。他曾在一篇自序中写道：“对自然的崇拜越深，对话越多，越对人类社会许多地方在追求发展的同时对环境的破坏堪忧，这也是我通过影像作品所传递的态度。”
自然无尽藏，万毅以他的观察方式传递了他听到的自然之声，在其中愿安静我们的心以虔诚的态度，得享自然更多的灵感与启迪。

Image and Imagery: Wan Yi’s “Mountain Rock”

Wan Yi’s photographic series “Mountain Rock”, as the title tells it all, focuses on plain mountain rock formations rather than scenery in general. Seen through his lens, their textures, colors, and lines interact to highlight conflicting, mysterious, aesthetic or dynamic forces.
Some of these forces are providentially reflected in Wan Yi’s state of mind, an indescribable dreamland laden with subconscious elements, intertwined with inconsistent loneliness and illusory profundity to conceal subliminal deconstruction, in short, full of thought-provoking and reverie-inducing imagery.
Which is exactly the kind of artistic expression that fascinates Wan Yi. He detects in this world of nature a tangible sense of roughness, like color lump brushwork in oil painting and wind erosion motley in lacquer, manifested in such an infinitely rich variety as only to be found in a heavenly fusion of sunshine and moonlight but never to be matched by a paintbrush. At work is a natural power that is unrestrained, ebullient, unique, and miraculous.
In selecting, editing, and processing these natural images, Wan Yi has made full use of his oil painting academic training, his life experience and reflection, and his ever-perfecting photographic skills to imbue these silent mountain rocks with his insights and contemplations in perspective of their temporal and spatial vicissitudes.
His paramount skill here is enlargement coupled with light processing which has achieved three results. First, by altering the conventional way of observation, natural texture is magnified into a visible language giving rise to a new visual experience of grasping a macroscopic view out of a microcosm. Second, close-ups offer an intense visual impact. One is made aware of these never-ending movements of colors and lines, life’s continuous circularity, and nature’s irreproducible beauty all embedded in these seemingly immobile and often neglected mountain rocks. Third, these images constitute in essence a homage to nature! Wan Yi has succeeded in enhancing their meaningfulness and expressiveness mainly by means of editing and color adjustment.
These photographic works forcefully embody both a subjective consciousness and an artistic orientation. As a form of spiritual communication with nature, they link one’s inner feelings and sentiments with their counterparts in nature in a deja-vu-like reunion while adopting the nature’s power and language to inspire a new thinking beyond old stereotypes and to release a spiritual influence inherent in a vision. Using photography as a medium, these pictures give viewers a glimpse of their own joys and sorrows, their passion and dream, an indistinct catharsis of expressionistic emotion, or the Chinese-style vitality and humility as depicted in mystic martial arts drawings, receiving in the process a touching appreciation visually and spiritually.
Interfacing between painting and photography, rejecting the empirical approach, Wan Yi has chosen to return to the original image of natural energy by focusing on sectional texture and internal structure without reference to any actual locality, thus professing his philosophy on nature and on human life. He once wrote in a self-penned preface, “The more I worship and converse with nature, the more I worry about human damage to the environment witnessed in so many places as a cost for pursuing development. It is this attitude that I want to convey in my photographic works. ”
Nature is an inexhaustible storehouse. Wan Yi seeks to transmit the sound of nature he has heard in his own exploration. With a spirit of tranquility and piety, we look to the nature to endow us with more inspiration and enlightenment.
